Travel Guard

Travel Guard is a North American travel insurance provider. It specializes in providing travel insurance, assistance and emergency travel service plans.

History
In 1982 John Noel developed the Travel Guard product while he was working at Sentry Insurance. Soon, John purchased the rights to Travel Guard and by 1985 Travel Guard was operating out of the basement of its founder’s home. The company acquired Marathon Travel Shops in 1987. Then, in 1991, the Travel Guard was acquired by French-based GMF, but Noel reacquired the company in 1993.

In 2000, Noel, David Lafayette and Nathan Lafayette created Travel Guard-Canada to offer travel insurance and travel services to Canadians. In May 2006, New York based American International Companies, Inc. (AIG) acquired Travel Guard. Travel Guard remains based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin with a new CEO, Dean Sivley, to serve as the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

In July 2009, Travel Guard moved to its new home in a business park located off I-39 in Stevens Point. The company currently operates as part of Chartis, AIG's rebranded U.S. property-casualty subsidiary. AIG subsidiary, National Union Fire Insurance Company, underwrites Travel Guard policies.

The Edge Bites Back?

Many of you would share my views on The Edge. It has lost its direction and relevance as "the" business paper that matters. I used to buy The Edge religiously but as the paper lost more and more capable writers and relied more and more on syndicated columns, it became dull and uninspiring. It was so obvious the paper was too keen to bulk up on how to make money, hence the special pullouts and the not so relevant Options. The opinion columns was getting off topic, many too centered on issues that were too intellectual or too macro to be a concern for the majority of readers.

Some of the columns reserved for in house writers were totally unnecessary and irrelevant, the printed page that tries to say something but ending up with nothing insightful.

Lately, I have gravitated back to The Edge cause they got Leslie Lopez to helm it. At least I know this guy will do some things differently. Let's look at the last week's issue:
- Dijaya ties up with Mah Sing (good cover and good story)
- Scomi shareholders feud (good insight into why they are fighting)
- Bright spots in property counters (this is so-so, not punchy enough)
- New power tenders (this is good stuff even though most wouldn't bother to read this)
- MAHB new fund raising (good and insightful)
- Clarity on AirAsiaX's IPO (important enough, more drill down please)
- Honda/Proton (could have been a better scoop if more investigative work was done on why Honda was "forced" to switch, and where was Oriental's story in this)
- Premier Naflin (hmmm, too restrained, its a political story more than a biz story, maybe no license to write more)
- WCT (ok, but WCt seems to be too much in the news anyways, just because some writer knows so-and-so better does not mean we have to hear about the every other week)
- Gadang (ok story, more concerns should be on funding side)
- TMC (great story and how the company repositioned)
- AEON Carrefour (this needs a bigger write up)

We don't mind reading regional stories. I also appreciate that The Edge Singapore is a natural feeder system for some pages as well, thats fine, but for Malaysians we are only concerned about the top 30 Singapore stocks, anything smaller I'd have to read The Edge Singapore, not for the Malaysian version.

Leslie, you are on the right track. Each week should have at least 10-15 local stories on companies but judging from the coverage now you are leveraging on your ties and network of GLCs and GLC-linked companies. You need a senior writer or two to look at current stocks like JCY, Benelac, Century Logistics, Hovid, Bright Packaging ...

Now back to buying The Edge for me. Good luck Leslie.

Why Obama Matters

Spent nearly the whole day following the US elections, why you might ask. If we were to have a global elections between Obama and Romney, I bet you it would be a landslide favouring Obama. The USA represents democracy for the rest of the world. Most citizens of other countries would watch and hope that the election and political processes in their own country may one day somehow live up to the US standard.

Obama is more than just the leader of the free world. He represents more than that. He made the world less racial. He represents the blurring of how people are treated badly because of the colour of their skin or where they are from. Although far from supporting GLT rights outright, the Democrats is the better of the two. It is a more enveloping and compassionate platform. It embraces.

On the fiscal and economic issues, Obama has done decently after taking over the legacy of issues from the Bush administration. Many things have been done but the real recovery will be slow. You cannot possibly do that overnight, no one can. Hence the re-election is all the more significant in that the economy isn't that well yet.

How will the markets take the Obama win? Markets would have preferred a Romney victory but an Obama victory is also not that bad. The first issue they have to address will be the fiscal cliff coming due in January 2013. It is likely something will be worked out, which will propel markets higher then. There is still tons of liquidity on the sidelines.

To Mitt Romney, who put up a good fight but his platform wasn't that different enough, plus he wasn't clear enough in supporting immigration, illegal aliens, GLT issues and the financial proposals lacked thoroughness and details. Still Mitt, look on the bright side, you could have also been an Astro employee with tons of IPO shares on margin.

Street Vendors / Local Farmers

This may be a small thing but we should really make it a concious effort on our part. Always try to buy from street vendors and local farmers plying their trade in a stand alone kerb stall. Their margins are low, they are trying to cut out the middleman, they are trying to cut out the wholesalers and distributors. They are trying to mitigate the effects of big bulk discount supermarkets. Of course I am not talking about those Petaling Street stalls that sell fake goods with 500% mark ups and they expect to be bargained down more than 50% anyways.

When you see genuine street vendors "making their own stuff", cooking their own food for sale, or local farmers plying their produce, .... try and buy from them, and try not to bargain. The same ringgit usually means more to someone than to us. Be thankful that we may have a job, a network or an education and work experience that allow us to make money much easier than a lot of other people. Being thankful is one thing, trying to be a good custodian of our good fortune and good things that come to us is another.

Have a good day....

More Could Be Done To Reduce Premiums

Current environment within the auto insurance sector is best described as uncertain.  The 2010 reforms changed the playing field but no one knows by how much.  Over the past 2 years industry data shows that accident benefit costs have dropped significantly but premiums have not followed suit.  Why not?

The 2010 reforms reduced the level of mandatory benefits that consumers much purchase.  As many people predicted almost all consumers chose the minimum coverages merely to avoid further rate increases.  However, a recent court decision (Zefferino v. Meloche Monnex Insurance) creates uncertainty even with regards to the impact of lower coverages.  The courts have signalled that if consumers were not properly informed of their options then insurers may be on the hook for the optional benefits.

This is not a problem that the government can fix.  Insurers need to be satisfied that they or their agents or brokers are properly informing policyholders about the optional benefits?  They need to be certain that they will be able to defend a claim by a policyholder that they were not properly informed about optional benefits.

To its credit, the government has continued examine auto insurance system and work on longer term reforms following the Five Year Review.  An expert panel was appointed in 2010 to review the SABS definition of catastrophic impairment.  However, the Superintendent's report on the expert panel's work has had minimal stakeholder support.  It appears that there has been no attempt to reach a compromise position to get more buy in from stakeholders and so that we can move forward on this issue.

In 2011, the Auto Insurance Anti-Fraud Task Force was appointed by the government to measure the impact of fraud in Ontario and recommend changes that would reduce the incidence of fraud.  The Task Force has now completed their work and we are awaiting the release of their final report.  In their status report released in their summer the Task Force indicated that some changes are already taken place such as changes to HCAI and better training for police regarding fraud identification.

Some of the more significant measures will require legislative and regulatory amendments.  It's up to the government to move forward on these recommendations if consumers are to see premium relief.  I also can't see why the insurance industry cannot set up an agency similar to the U.S. National Insurance Crime Bureau in Canada and duplicate some of its work.  It does not appear to require any legislation.  Not all the solutions can come from the government.

One of the more significant reforms introduced in 2010 is the SABS definition of minor injuries
along with the $3,500 cap on rehabilitation and assessment costs. This definition and cap should have brought about a significant reduction in premiums in Ontario.  However, a set of circumstance has failed to save consumers any money.  Most stakeholders have expressed some uncertainty as to whether the current interpretation of the SABS definition will withstand challenges within the dispute resolution system.  It is over 2 years since the reforms were implemented yet no disputes have made their way to arbitration at FSCO as a result of the ongoing backlog of cases in the dispute resolution system.

There are no quick fixes to address the chronic high caseloads at FSCO. However, FSCO could have facilitated more certainty in the system and lower premiums had it fast-tracked a number of cases through their system.  Nine million drivers are waiting to see whether the reforms have actually reduced costs in the system.  In addition, had these cases revealed flaws in definition (meaning a different interpretation than intended by the government) those issues could have already been addressed through regulatory amendments.
