When It's Time to Give Your Current Auto Insurance Quotes the Boot

Who’s found themselves stuck in a job, in an apartment or in a city they can’t actually stand the sight of, just because it’s comfortable?

We’ve all done it. I remember being absolutely terrified to quit my first job, the one I worked at for almost seven years while I finished high school and college. It wasn’t a spectacular job. There were no benefits, and the pay wasn’t going to pay the rent for anything bigger than a studio apartment on the side of town that you don’t take your mother to. Ever.

Even though it wasn’t going to offer me much hope for the future, I stuck with that job almost six months longer than I probably should have. Why? Because all the new job offers coming my way were just that. New. Uncertain. Filled with the potential to turn into layoffs. Tantalizing me with the prospect of evil co-workers and job duties that became dull and monotonous before the ink had even dried on the W-4.
I sacrificed potential for promises. The old was always going to be there, why take a chance on the new?
Is that what you’re doing with your auto insurance quotes?

It’s Not What You Want, It’s What You Know

Is your auto insurance giving you what you want? Ask most drivers that question and they’re going to blindly nod their heads. Of course they’re getting what they want. Nobody’s slapping a fine on them for driving uninsured, they’re not going to end up with a $100,000 hospital bill hanging over their heads if they’re responsible for an accident, and they can still pay their bills at the end of the month after their premiums have gone out. What’s not to like?

It’s what they know.

I understand. I do. I had the same auto insurance carrier from the time I was 16 until wayyyyyy past the point I should have realized it was time to go shopping. It was easy, it was comfortable, their premiums fit into my budget and, most importantly, it had been parentally approved. My parents had spent most of their life dealing with auto insurance quotes and coverage and all the goodies that go with it. They obviously know what they’re talking about!

Fast forward a few more years. Suddenly, people were getting laid off. My hours at work were cut back, and I found myself taking a serious pay cut for a job that offered enough hours to still have health insurance. (Have you SEEN what they’re charging for COBRA coverage these days?) It was the right decision at the time, but it meant we had to take a serious look at our budget-and our auto insurance quotes.
Necessity is the Mother of Getting Off Your Rear

For years I’d been putting off having to go in search of other auto insurance quotes. Now, staring me in the face, was the bitter truth. Complacency had dug me into a hole where what I thought I wanted wasn’t actually what I wanted, and what I actually wanted wasn’t what I thought I wanted, and my current insurance premiums weren’t giving me either.

And if you managed to follow that, come on over. I’ll give you a cookie.

The point is, I’d let myself settle into an auto insurance rut because I didn’t want to have to go shopping around for new coverage. It took a major life change to boot me out of the rut and send me out to the wide, terrifying world of auto insurance quotes to find some that would give me the coverage I needed at a price that wouldn’t leave my kids packing Ramen for lunch seven days a week. NOW Is the Time

Regardless of your reasons, if you’re wondering if it’s time to give your current insurer the boot it’s time to start shopping around for new and improved auto insurance quotes. Remember, shopping around for a quote isn’t the same as signing on the dotted line. You’re not committed to switching companies just because you start asking questions. If you’ve checked out all of your other options and you’re still happiest with the insurer you have, you know you’re making the right choice.

If you’re not? Well, then you’ve taken the first step toward getting out of that rut and moving in the right direction. Either way, what do you have to lose?
